FET Construction Partnership

In response to the current shortage of skills, some construction companies have assisted the Department of Education by revising and improving the learning content of the Building and Civil Construction syllabus for FET Colleges.

This Construction Industry FET College partnership was driven by 5 major construction companies and the objective of this program is to alleviate the skills shortage in the construction industry. Should you require more information on this, please visit the Department of Education’s website for more information – www.education.gov.za.

The 3 year construction program commenced in 2007 at the Northlink and Tshwane South Technical colleges and the curriculum documents are available on the website: www.thutong.doe.gov.za under new curriculum, NC (V) review resources. Registration as a user is required but is free of charge.

In addition to the three compulsory fundamental subjects, there are four compulsory core subjects which include the following:

  • Drawings, Setting-out, Quantities and Costing;
  • Plant and Equipment;
  • Materials; and
  • Construction Supervision (Level 4 only).

Learners are required to take a minimum prescribed number of elective subjects from the following options:

  • Carpentry and Roof work;
  • Concrete Structures (which includes formwork and steel reinforcing);
  • Masonry and Tiling;
  • Roads; and
  • Plumbing.

The Department has emphasised that the content of these abovementioned subjects must encourage the development of cognitive skills for an integrative approach to learning.  Should you require information on the current Subject and Assessment guidelines, for each of the subjects, please go view the website www.thutong.doe.gov.za.
